Ancillary 1

Introduction to Film Posters

The first of the ancillary tasks I will be completing is makign a film poster for my teaser trailer. The purpose of a film poster is to advertise the up-and-coming film and entice people to go and watch it. To ensure this, the poster must be effective in the sense that in conveys one particular message to the audience, it is aesthetically pleasing and targets one specific audience, has a particular house style regarding colours and fonts and clearly highlights the chosen genre/s to the audience.
Below is an annotated film posters highlighting some of the typical conventions of a film poster.

Audience Research

In order to target my audience successfully, I must conduct research into whether film posters attract them to watch a film and if so, what elements of the poster attract them the most. Below is a survey I have constructed which will hopefully give me evidence as to what my audience likes to I can replicate this in my own work.

Colours

I chose the specific colours in the picture to try and convey to the genre, relate to my teaser trailer and my target audience. The blue and white relates to my teaser trailer as those are two colours that frequently appear which will relate the two products together and are also two of the most common colours that appear in internet sites. The grey was inlcuded as it complimented the blue and white nicely and also can be used in a technological way. To ensure a femine audience was specified, I included a purple colour to deter the idea that the poster was mostly aimed at a male audience. However, I do not think the colour necissarily goes with the thriller aspect of my poster as even though my piece is a drama/thriller, in my research I found the thriller aspect usually overides the drama in posters. Therefore, I will see how the purple looks when I am creating my poster and decided whether it neutralises the suspense too much when I come to actually making the product.

Font:
Title- I used the sam font for the title of my poster that I used in my teaser trailer in order to keep consistency and so that people could identify and relate the two products together. Moreover, the font is good for my product in general as it is a pixelated 'internet' style font which highlights the theme of online usage.

'Trust' - I thought the word trust should be a different font to the rest of the font, therefore I chose a 'scratchy' font to achieve this. I chose to do this as it highlights the word trust and suggests that it is a big factor and contributing element to the narrative in the film, and also the 'scratchy' effect connotes the idea that trust itself will be damaged, hinting to the audience that change in the equilibrium will be caused by the break in trust.

Other words in the tagline- I tried to choose a more simple font to fit the conventions of a drama film poster. As well as the font being simple, I made sure it was more curved or flicked in someway, this communicates a more feminine feel and will attract my audience opposed to a male one.

First Draft

Second Draft:

Below is my second draft of my first ancillary task. I was unable to obtain peer feedback on my first draft as I had to sit a finance exam. Thus, it would be essential to have somebody asses my work and give me feedback as soon as possible to ensure I create a poster to the best standard possible. The changes that I did make where changing the title font. As the font wasn't available on the school computer before, I had to use a similar font. However, this inhibited the consistency of my work, therefore I used the same font as the title font in my teaser trailer to maintain consistency. Also I made the 'coming soon' font larger underneath the billing block as I felt it didn't stand out enough from the rest of the block. As the poster would be advertising the film, it is essential enticing lines stand out to provide myself with as much as an audience as possible.

Third Draft

Fourth Draft:

Final Draft Entry Post: 17/4/14

Today I completed my final draft of my film poster. The main changes that were made was editing the lighting back to how it looked in my first drafts. I achieved this by reapplying the blue hue and editing the brightness and contrast to create a very evident low key effect on the piece. The other evident change I made was reapplying the age rating symbol to make my piece look more conventional to a professional poster.
